How to Make Nature's Alchemy (Plant-Based Enzyme)
Ingredients:
- Use a plastic container with an airtight lid.
- Fruit and Vegetable Peels: 3 parts by weight (e.g., orange peels, lemon peels, vegetable trimmings). Avoid oily residues and animal products, use strictly peels/waste from fruits and vegetables.
-
Brown Sugar or Molasses: 1 part by weight (acts as a fermenting agent).
- Water: 10 parts by weight.
Steps:
- Mix the sugar with water in a large container. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
- Add the fruit and vegetable peels to the mixture.
- Cover the container in an airtight plastic container to keep oxygen from entering. Gases will build and will need to be "burped" as follows:
a. Week 1: Every day (sometimes 2x or 3x a day).
b. Week 2: Every other day.
c. Week 3: Every 3 days.
c. Week 4: One time.
d. Month 2: Check every two weeks.
e. Month 3: It is okay to leave container closed for the remaining time unless you suspect you need to check again. Always stir occasionally to release gases. - After 3 months fermentation is complete. Strain the liquid into a clean container. This is your enzyme concentrate.
The solid residues can be composted or used directly as fertilizer.
Plant Based Enzyme or "Garbage Enzyme" is a very straight forward process and will almost always work. However, here's are some troubleshooting tips in case it is needed:
Troubleshooting & Tips:
- Do not add rotten food, only fresh kitchen scraps. It's okay if it has been sitting for up to 3-4 days or so while you are filling your bucket to get to your 3 parts of scraps. Do not go longer or you will need extra brown sugar.
- A white layer will build on top. This is normal and expected, it indicates everything is going according to plan.
- Check and stir occasionally careful not to allow too much oxygen inside.
- If there is a foul or rotten smell (The first few days the smell is very pungent) add more sugar, stir and wait a few days before checking again.
